Les "Mystery Sonatas" ou "Rosary Sonatas" de Biber, composées pour la Confrérie du Rosaire de Salzbourg probablement vers 1676, sont considérées comme l'une des œuvres les plus avancées et innovantes de l'ère baroque. Ces sonates pour violon, au nombre de quinze, forment un cycle fascinant où Biber utilise pas moins de quatorze accordages différents du violon (scordaturas), démontrant ainsi son génie musical et son audace technique.
Chaque sonate est dédiée à un mystère du rosaire, allant de l'Annonciation à la Couronnement de Marie, Reine du Ciel.
